Special Issue Information

Biomaterials are materials designed to come into contact with living tissue without negatively affecting other bodily organs. These materials can be broadly classified into two categories: natural and synthetic. A wide range of biomaterials, with diverse designs, compositions, and surface modifications, have been studied to modulate host-material interactions and minimize adverse responses from the body. Biomaterial research is an interdisciplinary field that has progressed rapidly due to advancements in chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and medicine.
The use of biomaterials in biomedical applications, particularly for developing systems that can encapsulate, transport, and deliver active compounds in a sustained and/or controlled manner—specifically targeting desired sites of action at therapeutic doses—has been an area of intense exploration in recent decades. However, there is still much work to be done to identify biomaterials with clear, practical applications.
This Special Issue aims to present the latest developments in the preparation, physicochemical characterization, and both in vitro and in vivo biological evaluation of drug-loaded biomaterials. These include films, hydrogels, inorganic and/or organic micro/nanoparticles, polymer micelles, capsules, implants, inserts, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, emulsions, bio-composites, etc.
