Special Issue Information

Concrete is the most widely used construction material globally, playing a vital role in shaping modern infrastructure. However, its extensive production imposes significant environmental costs, with cement production alone accounting for approx. 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions due to its energy-intensive process. This challenge highlights the urgent need for innovative approaches to minimize the environmental impact of concrete while addressing the growing demands of urbanization and infrastructure development.

The pursuit of sustainability in concrete encompasses reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, enhancing material performance, and promoting circular economy principles. This Special Issue explores cutting-edge research, emerging technologies, and ground-breaking practices that contribute to the development of more sustainable, resilient, and eco-friendly concrete materials. The topics covered span a wide range of innovations, including the use of alternative binders and supplementary materials, advancements in recycling and waste utilization, the design of low-carbon and ultra-high-performance concrete, and the integration of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing in concrete design and production. This issue will provide novel ideas for related researchers, engineers, and scientists while promoting the practical adoption of sustainable concrete materials in the construction industry.
