Special Issue Information

The rapid urbanization, escalating climate challenges, and aging infrastructure demand transformative technologies for building construction and urban development. By 2050, over two-thirds of the global population will reside in cities, necessitating ecosystems that are not only efficient and sustainable but also inherently resilient - capable of adapting to environmental shocks and demographic pressures. Traditional construction and development practices, often hindered by siloed planning and labor-intensive workflows, are being replaced by data-driven, adaptive systems. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart construction technologies have emerged as pivotal enablers of this transformation, offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability while democratizing access to resilient solutions for underserved communities.

This Special Issue seeks to bridge academia, industry, and policymakers by showcasing interdisciplinary research that advances the resilience, adaptability, and intelligence of future cities. We welcome original research, critical reviews, short communications, and perspective that demonstrate theoretical breakthroughs, practical implementations, and policy frameworks for AI and smart construction technologies. By fostering dialogue on these innovations, we aim to advance the global agenda for urban development that is not only smarter but also more adaptive, inclusive and prepared for tomorrow's uncertainties.

We invite contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

AI-Driven intelligent Construction
• Generative AI for climate-adaptive urban layouts and disaster-resistant infrastructure.
• Predictive analytics for risk assessment, structural health, and energy demand forecasting.
• Digital twins and simulation tools for real-time city-scale management.
Autonomous and Robotics-Assisted Construction
• Robotic fabrication (3D printing, modular assembly) and human-robot collaboration (cobots).
• Drones and autonomous vehicles for inspection, logistics, and post-disaster recovery.
• AI-enhanced quality control, defect detection, and predictive maintenance.
Enhancing Resilience and Sustainability through AI
• Self-healing materials and smart infrastructure systems for durable, adaptive cities.
• AI-driven circular economy applications in construction waste and resource optimization.
• Energy-efficient buildings and grids powered by machine learning.
Data-Enabled Governance and Ethical Innovation
• IoT networks for structural health monitoring and disaster response.
• AI-powered decision-support systems for equitable urban governance.
• Ethical frameworks for AI adoption, addressing data privacy, algorithmic bias, and inclusive policymaking.
Case Studies and Global Scalability
• Lessons from post-disaster recovery and resilient urban prototypes.
• Metrics for evaluating resilience in smart cities across diverse socioeconomic contexts.
