Prof. Pawel Wargocki

Pawel Wargocki is a professor at the Technical University of Denmark. He is an academic teacher, scientist, industry consultant, and IAQ expert. He is a mechanical engineer by education. He has expertise in environmental psychology, physiology, and exposure monitoring, with over 30 years of experience in research on human requirements in indoor environments. He is a Fellow of ISIAQ, REHVA, and ASHRAE. He graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland and received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark, where he has been teaching and performing research ever since. He is known for his seminal work demonstrating that poor indoor environmental quality affects the performance of office work and learning. His research significantly influenced the requirements for indoor air quality, ventilation, and air cleaning. His research has recently focused on studies of human emissions, sleep quality, the development of IEQ rating schemes, the performance of green buildings, solutions for reducing infection risk and air cleaning, as well as interactions between different indoor environmental domains. He has trained and educated numerous students and scholars. He has collaborated with leading research institutions, universities, and industrial partners worldwide, including the National University of Singapore, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Waseda University in Tokyo, the Syracuse Center of Excellence, United Technologies, Velux, Boeing, and Google. He was the President and a long-standing board member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate(ISIAQ), President of the ISIAQ Academy of Fellows (previously the Academy of Indoor Air Sciences), Vice President of the Indoor Air 2008 conference, and Chair of several ASHRAE committees. He has been invited to many conferences as a keynote speaker and received several awards for his work and papers. Moreover, he published extensively.

Pasquale Avino received his Ph.D. in Chemical Sciences from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1997. He was appointed as Post-Doc (1997-1998) at the Department of Chemistry of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) in the Rowland (Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995) and Blake group. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences of the University of Molise, Campobasso, in Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. His scientific activity is devoted to the development of innovative analytical methodologies for the extraction, concentration and determination of organic micropollutants by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in food and environmental matrices; the assessment of air quality in indoor and outdoor environments; the identification and evaluation of microplastics in food and environmental matrices; biomass and gasification issues in the context of ecological transition.
He has received several National and International awards, including the “Environmental Sapio” Award for his research in the environmental field and the Medal for Ecology from the Moldavian Chemical Society.
Prof. Avino has authored and co-authored of different scientific publications papers including original papers published on national and international journals and books such as “Microplastics in Agriculture and Food Science” in 2025 and “New Perspectives in Indoor Air Quality” in 2026, both from Elsevier.
In 2026, Prof. Avino was the corresponding author of an article published in Nature Health, a journal of the Nature editorial group, titled Microplastics and nanoplastics in the human diet.

Prof. EL MANKIBI Mohamed

EL MANKIBI Mohamed is a Research Director and Professor at ENTPE/University of Lyon (France) and a member of the LTDS Laboratory (CNRS UMR5513). He holds a PhD (Hybrid Ventilation Control Strategies: Design and Assessment), is accredited to direct and manage research, and is qualified as an international expert by the French Ministry of Ecological Transition. He is the manager and Supervisor of building-related courses at ENTPE and Co-creator and Manager of several Master's degrees related to “Green Building”. Highly experienced in Green and Low-Impact Building design and optimization programs, he has two major research areas: dynamic simulation of thermal and aerothermal phenomena in buildings, and multi-objective optimization of Building systems and renewable energy while integrating occupant behavior. El Mankibi has been involved in many tasks of the International Energy Agency (ECES and ECBCS programs). He has taken part in several national research projects as coordinator or partner, as well as European/International projects. He has developed several original models and experimental devices and initiated and led partnerships with the building industry and urban planning stakeholders. He has been invited as a professor/researcher by the University of Colorado at Boulder, Concordia University of Montreal, Hunan University, and Green Energy Park (Morocco), as well as several Moroccan universities.
Introduction
Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) research has achieved substantial scientific maturity, yet its societal impact remains limited. This talk reflects on why strong evidence has not translated into widespread implementation, arguing that the historical focus on comfort and acceptability constrains both ambition and policy relevance. Comfort‑based frameworks aim to avoid dissatisfaction but are fundamentally misaligned with the World Health Organization’s definition of health, which emphasizes complete physical, mental, and social well‑being.
The talk highlights that the primary challenge is no longer evidence generation but implementation, performance verification, and real‑world exposure. The commonly accepted separation between indoor and outdoor air is also challenged through the ONE AIR paradigm, emphasizing continuous exposure across boundaries.
To address these limitations, a health‑centered definition is proposed, introducing the concept of a health‑sustaining indoor physical environment. Indoor air quality is reframed as a critical resource with societal and economic value comparable to water or energy. The talk concludes by identifying key challenges related to scaling, affordability, and integration into public health and environmental policy, aiming to make healthy indoor environments a universal condition.
