Science Exploration Press is pleased to officially announce the launch of Empathic Computing (EC), a peer-reviewed, open-access journal committed to playing a key role in showcasing the best research in Empathic Computing and in shaping how people connect with one another in the future. We are honored to have Prof. Mark Billinghurst serve as the Founding Editor-in-Chief.

Mark Billinghurst is Director of the Empathic Computing Laboratory, and Professor at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia, and also at the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. He earned a PhD in 2002 from the University of Washington and conducts research on how virtual and real worlds can be merged, publishing over 650 papers on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, remote collaboration, Empathic Computing, and related topics. In 2013 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and in 2019 was given the ISMAR Career Impact Award in recognition for lifetime contribution to AR research and commercialization. In 2022 he was selected for the ACM SIGCHI Academy, for leading human-computer interaction researchers, and also selected for the IEEE VGTC VR Academy for leading VR researchers.

Empathic Computing is a rapidly emerging field of computing concerned with how to create computer systems that better enable people to understand one another and develop empathy. This includes the use of technology such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) to enable people to see what another person is seeing in real time, and overlay communication cues on their field of view. Also, the use of physiological sensors, machine learning and artificial intelligence to develop systems that can recognize what people are feeling and convey emotional or cognitive state to a collaborator. The goal is to combine natural collaboration, implicit understanding, and experience capture/sharing in a way that transforms collaboration. We look forward to developing our journal into a leading venue for research in Empathic Computing. We warmly welcome researchers in related areas to join us in shaping the future of this exciting and rapidly evolving domain.

To support the growth of this emerging research field and to encourage high-quality early contributions, Empathic Computing is currently offering free publication with no article processing charges (APCs). By removing financial barriers, we aim to foster greater accessibility, promote global collaboration, and accelerate the dissemination of impactful research in this field.
