About Empathic Computing

Empathic Computing (EC, Online ISSN 3106-8014) is a peer-reviewed international academic journal dedicated to advancing the field of computing with a focus on creating systems that enhance human empathy and understanding. Launched by Science Exploration Press, the journal aims to publish high-quality research that explores innovative technologies and methodologies designed to improve interpersonal connections and collaborative experiences. It focuses on cutting-edge, innovative, and interdisciplinary research in computer science, human-computer interaction (HCI), and affective technologies, aiming to build a high-level international academic exchange platform for global researchers, engineers, and scholars to share high-quality original findings.

The Editor-in-Chief is Professor Mark Billinghurst, a pioneer in HCI and AR. In 2013, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has received numerous top honors, including the IEEE VR Lifetime Achievement Award, ISMAR Lifetime Achievement Award, and VGTC Virtual Reality Career Achievement Award. The Editorial Board comprises a distinguished group of international experts, including Professor Carolina Cruz-Neira, Professor Joaquim Jorge, and Professor Stefania Serafin.

The scope of the journal includes but is not limited to: Collaborative AR/VR/MR experiences; Using sensors for emotion recognition and sharing; Capturing and sharing real environments; Machine learning and AI methods for emotion recognition; Novel collaborative interfaces; Models of emotion and empathy; Collaborative systems that recognize and respond to emotional states; Evaluation methods for empathic computing; Models of communication and collaboration; Technologies for conveying emotion and empathy; Definitions and taxonomy of AR/VR/XR and empathic systems.

Application Eligibility

To further enhance the international academic impact of the journal, EC is currently recruiting Youth Editorial Board Members worldwide. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

• Aged 45 or below
• Holding a Ph.D. degree or an associate senior academic title (or above)
• Have published at least 5 high-quality papers as the first or corresponding author in reputable international journals (SCI/EI indexed) or top-tier academic conferences (e.g., ACM CHI, IEEE VR, ISMAR) within the past 5 years
• Possess strong international academic communication skills and high academic engagement
• Willing to devote time to actively supporting the journal’s development
• No record of academic misconduct

Duties

• Providing professional, rigorous, and timely peer-review reports (at least 3 manuscripts per year)
• Submitting or organizing high-quality manuscripts to EC (at least 1 contribution as the first or corresponding author per year)
• Promoting EC regionally and internationally through academic conferences, workshops, and professional social networks
• Participating in annual editorial board meetings and academic activities organized by the journal
